Flying blind on a Hawkman Rocket Cycle

Hawkman Rocket Cycle

When you absolutely have to hang out with flying Hawkmen there is no better way to fly.

Hawkman Rocket Cycle

The Hawkman Rocket Cycle, the slickest ride in all of Sci-Fidom. It’s the toy I never got as an 8 year old kid. Not because my Dad wouldn’t buy it for me but because no company thought to make it and ever since there has been a giant hole in my heart.

Hawkman Rocket Cycle

Well the 8 year old kid in me can rejoice because BifBangPow! is going to save everyone of us. That’s right after 27 years a toy maker finally gets it and is bringing Flash Gordon figures to the market.

Hawkman Rocket Cycle

BifBangPow! is a new toy company owned by Jason Lenzi and Jason Lab and their first two properties are The Big Lebowski and Flash Gordon. Both lines look very cool but it’s the Flash Gordon stuff I am here to talk about today.

First up are Flash and Ming The Merciless, both sculpted and designed by Alex Ross and the prototypes look fantastic. I have it on good authority that if these guys sell well we will get more characters added and the chance to finally get a Hawkman Rocket Cycle.

Hawkman Rocket Cycle

iPhone Unlocked. What took them so long?

As of August 24th, 12:00pm the Apple’s iPhone has been unlocked. Engadget reports a team of developers have a proven method of performing a software unlock on the iPhone allowing you to use another GSM network provider (in the States that would be T-Mobile).

The article states that all the functions work including internet with the exception of the Visual Voicemail feature. A program developed for AT&T. Not a big deal in my opinion.

At this point there appear to be 4 very public groups performing the software unlock. One is saying they will make the software available for free the rest want to cash in, much to the chagrin of AT&T’s lawyers.

Will an unlocked phone stay unlocked? Will apple do an upgrade down the road to prevent you from unlockng the phone or brick your already unlocked phone? Only time will tell but I suspect that in just a few months I’ll be storing my poopy Sidekick for a far better internet enabled device. :)

You can follow this story at Engadget here, here, here and here. And believe me this is not the last we will be hearing about this.

Luke Skywalker’s Lightsaber heading into space.

First the Post Office whips up stamps and now NASA is taking lightsabers into Space. Cool!

“According to recent news out of NASA, the next time the Discovery crew take their ship into orbit, the “force” will be with them — because they’re taking Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber along for the ride. That’s right, for the film’s 30th anniversary, the original lightsaber prop from the first Star Wars film is taking a ride into actual space… but that’s not all.”

Morgan Webb’s Webb Alert

Those who read my posts regularly know I really dug the folks over at Tech TV, and have followed most of those folks as they have migrated their acts to the internet. Luckily TechTV/G4 kept Morgan Webb and Adam Sessler from X-Play as that is about the only show really worth watching on that channel. Taking her patented dry, sardonic wit to the net, Morgan does a 5 min daily tech news roundup in her new daily video cast. Currently new episodes normally appear Monday thru Thursday on her web sight Webb Alert.

New Glyos System Series Toy Line Introduces Old School Playability to Independent Toy Scene

Onell Design applies classic injection molding to small run toy production

ACTON, MA, August 20, 2007 – Onell Design, a new independent toy and comic company, is pleased to announce the debut of its Glyos System Series toy line. hearkening back to the action figure design principles of the mid-1980’s, these rugged toys are made with playability, durability and accessibility in mind.

Unveiled at the 2007 San Diego Comic-Con, the Glyos System Series was well received by adults and kids alike. “They have what a lot of the “collector” toys are missing these days, and that is FUN. You can actually play with them,” writes Josh Bernard, owner of CollectionDX, in his August 9th review of the product. The new line features three different versions of Space Traveler Pheyden – Standard (blue), Gear’s Edge (sepia) and Phase (clear green) – and three versions of Prototype Sincroid Exellis – Standard (midnight), Hyper (yellow) and Aves (red).

The Glyos System Series figures are produced using a full-color classic injection molding process, as opposed to the current rotocast toy trend. The durable PVC construction results in a unique aesthetic that appeals to the seasoned toy collector but can also withstand the rough play that comes with child’s active imagination.

Each figure stands 2.75” tall, has 12 points of articulation, and is guaranteed to “Survive the Pocket”. As an added bonus, all parts are fully interchangeable. Window-boxed in unique packaging, both the Pheyden and Exellis toys come with a mini catalog and collector card. The figures are now available for $10 each at www.onelldesign.com.

About Onell Design:

Onell Design, a small independent company owned and operated by a husband and wife team, is dedicated to producing original toys and comics. All products are created in limited runs to ensure collectability, paving the way for innovative new projects. The Glyos System Series is the brainchild of Matt Doughty, founder of Onell Design, who is responsible for the conceptual artwork, character design, sculpting, and figure packaging. Onell Design also produces several original comics, including Gear’s Edge, Rechlen and Aves, MicroShow and Sidrick.

Godfather of the Internet predicts the end of Television

Thirty years ago he helped create a technology that has revolutionised millions of lives around the world. But yesterday the man known as the “godfather of the net” laid out his vision of where our online future might be, including a time when we download entire TV series in seconds - and even surf the web from Mars.

Talking at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival, Vint Cerf - one of the handful of researchers who helped build the internet in the 1970s - said that the television industry would change rapidly as it approached its “iPod moment”.

The 64-year-old, who is now a vice-president of the web giant Google and chairman of the organisation that administrates the internet, told an audience of media moguls that TV was rapidly approaching the same kind of crunch moment that the music industry faced with the arrival of the MP3 player.

“85% of all video we watch is pre-recorded, so you can set your system to download it all the time,” he said. “You’re still going to need live television for certain things - like news, sporting events and emergencies - but increasingly it is going to be almost like the iPod, where you download content to look at later.”

Good News TechTV fans. The Revolution will be televised but not on your TV.

Tech TV was a smaller, independent cable network that focused on technology a few years back and I loved the channel! It was an excellent mix of tech news, product reviews, how-to and tech info in general. Then Comcast bought it and merged it with G4 and all that made Tech TV was destroyed. The hosts of the different shows where all very knowledgable and you could trust their insights and information. Tv has not been the same since it went away.

From wikipedia:
TechTV (May 11, 1998May 28, 2004) was a 24-hour cable and satellite channel based in San Francisco, California featuring news and shows about computers, technology, and the Internet. At the height of its six year run, TechTV was broadcast in 70 countries, reached 43 million households, and claimed 1.9 million unique visitors monthly to its website. [1] A focus on personality-driven product reviews and technical support made it a cultural hub for technology information worldwide, still existing today online through its former hosts’ podcasts.

It originally was called ZDTV by its founder, Ziff-Davis, when it debuted on May 11, 1998. It later was owned by Paul Allen’s Vulcan Ventures. Vulcan Ventures sold TechTV to G4 Media (owned primarily by Comcast), which merged it with the video game channel G4 in May 2004 to form G4techTV. In February 2005, the name was changed back to G4, eliminating TechTV from the name completely.”

Our intrepid hosts went their separate ways but quickly found them selves online trying new ways to distribute media. Flash forward a few years and there is now some major online content available. So if you where a fan but somehow have been missing what is where let me enlighten you.

Revision3 – Quickly becoming the giant in online/ondemand content. Revision3 houses weekly video podcasts from Kevin Rose, Martin Sargent, Patrick Norton, Jessica Corbin, Hahn Choi, Dan Huard and many other new faces as well. Programming varies from Systm (a how-to show with Patrick Norton and David Randolph) to The Totally Rad Show ( a fun geek show on comics, movies, tv and video quickly becoming a favorite of mine.) Most shows are weekly

TWIT- Leo Laport formed his own podcast network and primarily focuses on audio podcasts. Over a dozen are available from This Week In Tech (roundtable discussion with other former TechTV alumni including Robert Heron and John C. Devorak) to Security Now with Steve Gibson. Most shows are weekly.

DL.TV – a biweekly video podcast much in the style of the old Screensavers but scaled down to just the two hosts, Robert Heron and Patrick Norton. Patrick left ZDNet and DL.TV recently for a “new gig”. What the new gig is not known for sure but rumor is he is heading to Revision 3. Patrick promised he would share more info on where he is going on this coming Sundays TWIT.

Cranky Geeks – A weekly video podcast roundtable discussion about tech news hosted by John C. Dvorak (but with John’s patented crankiness).

East Meets West- A weekly audio podcast with Roger Chang and Tom Merritt.

Webb Alert- Morgan Webb does a daily blog roundup in 5 mins.  Morgan is the latest to jump into the online content boom and I wish her the best of luck.

So there you have it. If you seek out the different shows and subscribe thru your iTunes software it’s like having your very own TechTV ondemand. Not only that for me (being a techy, geeky guy) what these folks are offering for content blows away most major TV programing. If you have not tried any of these shows out and your into the subject matter you need to do yourself a favor and give them a try.
