Tech TV was a smaller, independent cable network that focused on technology a few years back and I loved the channel! It was an excellent mix of tech news, product reviews, how-to and tech info in general. Then Comcast bought it and merged it with G4 and all that made Tech TV was destroyed. The hosts of the different shows where all very knowledgable and you could trust their insights and information. Tv has not been the same since it went away.
From wikipedia:
“TechTV (May 11, 1998 – May 28, 2004) was a 24-hour cable and satellite channel based in San Francisco, California featuring news and shows about computers, technology, and the Internet. At the height of its six year run, TechTV was broadcast in 70 countries, reached 43 million households, and claimed 1.9 million unique visitors monthly to its website. [1] A focus on personality-driven product reviews and technical support made it a cultural hub for technology information worldwide, still existing today online through its former hosts’ podcasts.
It originally was called ZDTV by its founder, Ziff-Davis, when it debuted on May 11, 1998. It later was owned by Paul Allen’s Vulcan Ventures. Vulcan Ventures sold TechTV to G4 Media (owned primarily by Comcast), which merged it with the video game channel G4 in May 2004 to form G4techTV. In February 2005, the name was changed back to G4, eliminating TechTV from the name completely.”
Our intrepid hosts went their separate ways but quickly found them selves online trying new ways to distribute media. Flash forward a few years and there is now some major online content available. So if you where a fan but somehow have been missing what is where let me enlighten you.
Revision3 – Quickly becoming the giant in online/ondemand content. Revision3 houses weekly video podcasts from Kevin Rose, Martin Sargent, Patrick Norton, Jessica Corbin, Hahn Choi, Dan Huard and many other new faces as well. Programming varies from Systm (a how-to show with Patrick Norton and David Randolph) to The Totally Rad Show ( a fun geek show on comics, movies, tv and video quickly becoming a favorite of mine.) Most shows are weekly
TWIT- Leo Laport formed his own podcast network and primarily focuses on audio podcasts. Over a dozen are available from This Week In Tech (roundtable discussion with other former TechTV alumni including Robert Heron and John C. Devorak) to Security Now with Steve Gibson. Most shows are weekly.
DL.TV – a biweekly video podcast much in the style of the old Screensavers but scaled down to just the two hosts, Robert Heron and Patrick Norton. Patrick left ZDNet and DL.TV recently for a “new gig”. What the new gig is not known for sure but rumor is he is heading to Revision 3. Patrick promised he would share more info on where he is going on this coming Sundays TWIT.
Cranky Geeks – A weekly video podcast roundtable discussion about tech news hosted by John C. Dvorak (but with John’s patented crankiness).
East Meets West- A weekly audio podcast with Roger Chang and Tom Merritt.
Webb Alert- Morgan Webb does a daily blog roundup in 5 mins. Morgan is the latest to jump into the online content boom and I wish her the best of luck.
So there you have it. If you seek out the different shows and subscribe thru your iTunes software it’s like having your very own TechTV ondemand. Not only that for me (being a techy, geeky guy) what these folks are offering for content blows away most major TV programing. If you have not tried any of these shows out and your into the subject matter you need to do yourself a favor and give them a try.
