Keeping Your Batteries at Optimal Efficiency with a Lead Acid Battery Charger

Selecting the correct auto battery charger for lead acid batteries is important. The technique in which we charge the battery is also very crucial as well. It is said that we should not deep cycle lead acid batteries even if they say they can be. What this means is for optimal efficiency these batteries should be charged when they loose anywhere between 50-60% of their charge and not be permitted to lose nearly all of their charge. The way in which you charge your battery is another significant aspect.

The majority of the bulk of the charge must be put in first and then the balance of the smaller charge would follow. Although, this first bulk charge needs to be regulated as well. Putting too great a charge rate into the battery can lead to too much heat and allow the battery plates to buckle and become bent. This could trigger the plates to short circuit over a period of time and you might find that you have a spoiled cell that cannot recover.

Some of the latest lead acid car battery chargers are designed to compensate for temperature changes and alter the charge rate accordingly. The most recent car charging systems are said to be advanced enough to alter and uphold your battery at it’s optimal charge, but in reality, it appears this doesn’t really happen.

It’s a good idea to get a lead acid battery charger with a built-in charging and monitoring apparatus.

These kinds of chargers should be able to charge the weaker cells when needed but not put too much charge into the stronger cells. The danger of charging a battery too quickly can cause thermal runaway and cause the battery to get hot and possibly explode. It’s for this reason that these complex chargers are the best choice but can be more pricey to get in the first place.

If price is a problem, then trickle charging batteries are a safer way of maintaining your batteries in peak condition. If the charger does not have a monitoring system to stop the charge after the battery is full, then you will have to remember to turn off the charger yourself when the charge reaches full capacity.

The best way to keep batteries topped up for cars that are not being used that often is to use a battery conditioner.

These monitor the flow of current continuously and will maintain your battery in a optimal condition all the time, and these can be left on all year round. You’ll want to give your battery a chance to lose some of it’s excess charge naturally, so try to switch off your battery conditioner every so often. This is an important part of preserving your batteries and ensuring they last a long time.
