A survey by British Car Auctions in conjunction with honestjohn found that 32% failed to pick out the correct registration number when asked to select the youngest one in a sample. Most were also unaware that the zero in 08 signifies the month of march whereas the five in 58 signifies September of the same year. Many were unable to establish the year of a car at all from it’s registration number. The combination of twice yearly changes and complicated year identifiers has confused motorists who are at risk of paying too much for used cars.
