Veterinary Schools: Why Should I Enter One?
Handling and taking care of animals is by no means an easy task. People aspiring to have a career in the field of veterinary medicine needs not only proper education and training, but they also need to have a genuine love for animals. Whether you like to be a full-pledged veterinarian, or a hard-working veterinary technician, you will need to have a good foundation which will prepare you for the challenges that await you, and this is where veterinary schools come into the picture. Before you get into any veterinary college, you first need to ask yourself what field of veterinary medicine you would like to take on. If you like to become a licensed veterinarian, then you will need to enroll in a bachelor’s degree program and then take a doctor’s degree course. This can take anywhere from 4 to 8 years, and will usually include clinical training. Passing a certain licensure exam is also needed before you can practice your profession. If you think becoming a veterinarian may be too much for you, then maybe becoming a veterinary technician or technologist is a better option for you. Their job is to help vets in taking care of animals, just like a registered nurse helps a doctor take care of people. Completing a 2-3 year associate’s degree program is required here, as well as participating in clinical training. In some states, certification may also be required. After you figure out what particular part of veterinary medicine you would like to specialize in, then it is now time to choose a veterinary college. A good advice is to enroll in veterinary schools which are located within your state for the reason that most schools give priority to state residents and offer tuition discounts too. Also, always check to see if the school has been accredited by the AVMA or the American Veterinary Medical Association. After you have made a list of the veterinary schools you are interested in, it may be a good idea to make a personal visit with each one. This will allow you to personally meet school representatives and inquire about important matters such as admission requirements, student support and career placement. You can also do some online research in order to learn more about these schools.
