The Mechanics of Lasik Surgery
It is important to know what LASIK surgery really is before a person can have a total understanding of how it is performed. Laser In Situ Keratomileusis or more often referred to as LASIK is called as a “procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea; the clear covering of the front part of the eye”. Its utmost objective is to aid in ending the dependency of people in corrective eyewear like contact lenses and/or eye glasses.
About half an hour is all it takes to complete the operation. In the same room where the hardware is located, the patient will be placed on a reclining chair. The doctor will place an eye drop numbing fluid once the patient is ready. The surgery site will then be totally prepped and cleaned.
During the San Diego Lasik Surgery operation, the doctor will keep the patient’s eyelids from closing with a speculum. After that, a type of ring is applied to the eye and high amounts of pressure will be applied, creating a vacuuming effect on the cornea. During this part of the operation, only a small amount of discomfort and/or pressure will be experienced by the patient.
Then, the doctor will attach a Microkeratome, which is a cutting type of instrument, to the metal ring that is already affixed to the eye. Using this instrument, a small cut will be made into the cornea. At this point in the operation, the patient will be numbed and probably feel no pain.
