Have Fun Carving Pumpkins For A Halloween Spookfest
You can tell Halloween is close at hand when you start to see Halloween pumpkins making an appearance in front yards and in seasonal decorations. All Hallows Eve may only happen once a year but the ritual of pumpkin carving and setting out jack-o’-lanterns — as well as all the haunted house decor that Halloween is famous for — make the end of October a rival only to Christmas as the moment for domestic decoration.
Lucky for us that Halloween takes place in the fall with all its gorgeous rich autumnal color that is first found with the wonderful spectacle of the turning of the trees. Pumpkins participate in this colorful display with their quintessential orange hues that match the seasonal colors so well. Many people prefer to carve larger pumpkins, but don’t forget the smaller types that are edible: this is a time of year that makes the most of mouthwatering pumpkin recipes. We’re in the habit of eating pumpkin pie at the time of Thanksgiving, but there a lot of other recipes that put to good use the pumpkin flesh that’s left behind after our carving efforts, such as cakes, soup and bread.
If you’re hoping to have a go at carving your pumpkins yourself, there are specially designed implements you can buy to make particular shapes and help you scoop out the fleshy pulp inside the fruits. Don’t forget to be careful when you’re working with sharp tools, of course — and let only the grown-ups do all the cutting. Then the children can amuse themselves decorating the pumpkins afterwards.
Pumpkins may seem tough and hard wearing when new, but inevitably they will decay, especially when placed outside. To be sure that your gruesome gourds have as long a display life as possible, don’t start carving them too early on in case they start drying out or going badcan sometimes make also a difference to put them in a cool, shady spot.
Are you new to pumpkin carving? If so, start simple at first and don’t attempt a pattern that’s too complicated. You’ll find that the ghostly glow of a classic pumpkin is really impressive even with a basic pattern. If you’re more experienced or feel like trying at something more unique, you can print your design on paper and transfer the shape onto the pumpkin’s surface with a marker or score around an outline.
Last, don’t feel you have to carve your pumpkin at all if you don’t want to. There are loads of fun effects and designs you can achieve simply by decorating its surface. You can create attractive designs with paint and stickers that will make your jack-o’-lanterns splendidly unique.
