Liquid crystal display screens aren’t exactly the same dimension as CRT screens. Small LCD monitors are really bigger for exactly the same sized CRT monitor! Check measurements are measured diagonally. Because the advent from the television, this has been the business regular for screen measurements. When computer screens hit the scene, the measurement started to be the diagonal measurement of the tube alone, not the actual viewable display. When you take a look at your check, there is a plastic box that houses your CRT tube and other elements, but when you take a look at the front of the check, there’s probably an inch or more of framework around your image tube. This hides the rest of the CRT tube that’s enclosed inside the box.

Now have a ruler or tape measure, and measure the actual picture you are viewing, measure diagonally, and you’ll see that the real measurement is scaled-down than the monitors claimed size. For instance, my 19 inch CRT monitor, measuring the actual picture from the bottom left hand corner from the picture towards the upper right hand corner is really 17.25 inches, or in other words, only .25 inches bigger than 17 inches, if the check measurement were the actual viewing screen this 19 inch monitor would only qualify as a 17 inch tft lcd monitor. This really is where the Lcd measurement comes in.

Little Liquid crystal display monitors (and large ones!) are measured by actual viewable location from the screen. They do not have a large rounded out tube beyond the display, it is really a flat panel of Liquid Crystals behind which are a collection of tube lights that shine through the color crystals to illuminate your screen. A 17 inch Liquid crystal display check is 17 inches diagonally, a 19 inch check is 19 inches diagonal or about 1.75 inches bigger than my example of the CRT tube.

An additional small known glich in monitor measurements is how the diagonal measurement of the widescreen check decreases the general height from the check which in change reduces the actual size of a regular 4:3 to some smaller dimension. Instance: If you buy a 32 inch widescreen TV and view a regular broadcast movie in it’s original format, you in essence are watching a 26 inch television.
